Ukraine Pressured by Trump to Halt Attacks on Russian Oil Sites

by admin477351

Amid rising fuel prices, former U.S. President Donald Trump has urged Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to halt attacks on Russian oil refineries and other diesel-related facilities. Trump contends that these strikes are exacerbating a global shortage of diesel, as prices in the U.S. have soared past $6 per gallon, setting new records. He advised Ukraine to shift its focus away from targeting Russian energy infrastructure and instead concentrate on other military objectives.

Ukraine has been intensifying its long-range strikes on Russia’s oil and gas industry, causing disruptions in refining and contributing to shortages within Russia itself. In response, Moscow has limited diesel exports, further straining the international market. This situation is compounded by interruptions in oil shipments through the Strait of Hormuz in the wake of a conflict involving Iran. As reported by the International Energy Agency, diesel and gasoil exports from Gulf countries in August plummeted to just over 25% of their levels before the war.

Kyiv maintains that the Russian energy sector plays a crucial role in funding its military operations in Ukraine, hence the continued targeting of Russian oil infrastructure, including refineries and storage sites. In retaliation, Russia has ramped up its assaults on Ukrainian cities and infrastructure, with recent overnight strikes causing casualties and damage in areas like Odesa. Both sides have engaged in significant drone exchanges, with Ukraine targeting Russian industrial zones and Russia hitting Ukrainian residential and strategic locations.

The escalating fuel prices have become a pressing issue in the United States, especially with the November midterm elections approaching. Trump’s appeal for Ukraine to curb its attacks on Russian energy facilities underscores growing concerns about the conflict’s impact on global fuel supplies. The situation highlights the broader geopolitical and economic ramifications of the ongoing war and its influence on international markets.
