British tennis player Sonay Kartal has achieved a career milestone by reaching the final of the Wuhan Open, following a straight-sets victory over Jelena Ostapenko. Kartal, ranked world No. 170 at the tournament’s start, triumphed with scores of 7-6 (9), 7-6 (5) on Saturday, overcoming deficits in both sets and saving six set points in the process.

This victory is particularly significant for the 24-year-old, who is making a strong comeback after a six-month hiatus due to a back injury. Kartal has demonstrated impressive form since her return, defeating established players such as Belinda Bencic, Jasmine Paolini, and Elina Svitolina.

Kartal’s run at the Wuhan Open makes her the lowest-ranked player to reach a WTA 1000 final since the format’s inception in 2009. Her performance ensures she will enter the world’s top 50 in the upcoming rankings, surpassing Katie Boulter to become Britain’s new female singles No. 1.

In her match against Ostapenko, Kartal showcased remarkable mental resilience, recovering from significant setbacks in both sets and clinching victory in two demanding tiebreaks. She described the encounter as one of her toughest and expressed pride in her mental fortitude.

Kartal had previously drawn attention with a fourth-round appearance at Wimbledon in 2025, though her progress was hampered by injury. Her recent performances in China indicate a return to form and her potential to establish herself among the top players on the women’s tour.

In the other semi-final, Poland’s Maja Chwalińska defeated her compatriot Iga Świątek with a 7-5, 6-1 victory. Świątek struggled with a left-thigh injury, requiring a medical timeout and continuing the match with her leg bandaged.
