Vietnam’s VNREDSat-1 satellite program has forged a significant partnership with France in the realm of space technology, setting the stage for advancements in next-generation satellites, technology transfer, and bolstering domestic expertise. Launched on May 7, 2013, as Vietnam’s inaugural Earth observation satellite, VNREDSat-1 was transferred for operation by September of that year. Remarkably, the satellite remains functional in 2026, far exceeding its initial five-year lifespan by remaining operational for 14 years.
The program has not only put Vietnam on the map for satellite operations but has also expanded the country’s technical expertise. Between 2011 and 2013, Vietnamese engineers underwent rigorous training in France and Vietnam, where they learned about system design, satellite operations, and troubleshooting. Over time, they transitioned from relying on transferred processes to independently resolving technical issues, showcasing a significant development in their capabilities.
In addition to operational training, Vietnam has established a comprehensive remote-sensing system that manages imaging requests, satellite control, data reception, processing, storage, and distribution. Since 2020, VNREDSat-1 has provided nearly 30,000 satellite images supporting environmental and natural-resource management, disaster monitoring, scientific research, socio-economic development, and activities related to defense and security.
Trần Hồng Thái, President of the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology, emphasized that the program has created a crucial technical and human-resource base for future satellite endeavors. However, he noted that achieving technological self-reliance would require further progress in satellite design, payloads, electronics, flight software, assembly, integration, testing, and ground systems.
The collaboration entered a new phase during French President Emmanuel Macron’s state visit to Vietnam in May 2025. During this visit, a declaration of intent was signed between the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology, Airbus Defence and Space, and the French National Centre for Space Studies, aiming for long-term cooperation in space technology and Earth observation. The partners are currently exploring a next-generation Earth observation system and technological options for a proposed VNREDSat-2. Future collaborations are set to focus on enhancing Vietnamese involvement in mission planning, system design, subsystem development, software, testing, and data applications, with areas like control software, remote-sensing image processing, artificial intelligence, ground systems, and selected sensors and payloads offering opportunities for Vietnam to build robust domestic expertise. The overarching goal is to transition from purchasing satellite systems to co-developing and mastering technology, enabling Vietnamese scientists and engineers to eventually design, operate, troubleshoot, and develop future satellite technology independently.
