Macron Plans to Ban Unauthorised Protests Amidst France’s Civil Unrest

by admin477351

French President Emmanuel Macron announced plans to ban unauthorised protests as the government attempts to restore order following widespread unrest during recent cost-of-living demonstrations. This decision was made after a meeting with intelligence officials and senior ministers, where Macron emphasized the need to protect city centres, businesses, and public buildings from looters and groups he accuses of undermining the French Republic.

Macron stated that while demonstrations organized by recognized groups could continue, these would be subject to legal requirements and potential changes to their routes. However, protests organized by individuals or groups without legitimate authority would be prohibited. The move is part of an effort to maintain public safety as tensions rise across the country.

In response to the ongoing unrest, which has included looting and violent clashes, authorities have imposed restrictions in cities such as Lyon, Marseille, Nice, and Toulon. In Paris, some demonstrations have been allowed with route limitations, while others have been banned altogether. Businesses in affected areas are taking precautions amid fears of further violence.

The unrest has resulted in a significant police presence, with thousands of arrests reported since the protests began. Justice Minister Gérald Darmanin revealed that hundreds of individuals are facing prosecution, and some suspects have been detained. Meanwhile, Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu is engaging with political leaders to address the crisis collaboratively.

Security measures have been intensified, including partial night-time curfews and restrictions on gatherings near government buildings and major transport hubs. The protests initially stemmed from concerns over staff shortages and deteriorating conditions in schools but have since evolved into a broader movement against rising living costs, expanding to include strikes, blockades, and rallies.

As public discontent continues to grow, the French government faces the challenge of balancing the need for public safety with the right to peaceful protest. Macron has also announced plans to hold a defence council meeting to discuss further security measures ahead of nationwide demonstrations scheduled for Saturday and the days that follow.
