Keir Starmer Resigns After Finalizing India-UK Trade Agreement

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, in the final days of his tenure, secured a significant diplomatic achievement by concluding the India-UK Free Trade Agreement (FTA). This milestone was reached during discussions with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the G7 Summit 2026, where they set July 15 as the launch date for the India-UK Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA). The deal is anticipated to enhance the already substantial trade relationship between the two countries, valued at approximately £48 billion annually.

Starmer, a staunch advocate for stronger UK-India relations, had prioritized this trade deal as a central goal of his administration. He emphasized the economic growth prospects presented by the agreement, citing India’s expanding global economic role and the advantages of streamlined trade processes. Since taking the helm of the Labour Party after their 2019 electoral defeat, Starmer has been instrumental in mending connections with the British Indian community and fostering a robust partnership with India, focusing on trade, security, education, technology, and climate cooperation.

Before his political career, Starmer was known for his distinguished work in law, notably serving as the Director of Public Prosecutions. He ascended to the role of Prime Minister following Labour’s decisive victory in the 2024 elections. Despite initial successes in economic stabilization and domestic reform, Starmer faced mounting policy challenges and political hurdles that eventually eroded his standing.

In an emotional resignation speech, Starmer acknowledged the loss of confidence from his parliamentary colleagues regarding his capacity to lead Labour into the next general election. He expressed gratitude and respect for their decision, marking the conclusion of an impactful era in British politics.
