In a significant diplomatic development, Thailand and France have decided to elevate their bilateral relationship to a strategic partnership. The agreement was reached during official discussions in Paris between Thailand’s Anutin Charnvirakul and French President Emmanuel Macron. The talks, held at the Élysée Palace, focused on broadening cooperation across various sectors, including trade, investment, cybersecurity, defense, and advanced technology. Both leaders also reviewed regional issues involving Cambodia and Myanmar, emphasizing a collaborative approach.
The two nations are set to enhance cooperation in industries such as alternative energy, aerospace, aviation, smart power grids, and artificial intelligence infrastructure. France has reiterated its support for the timely conclusion of the Thailand-European Union free trade agreement negotiations, which are expected to be finalized within the year. Originally launched in 2013 and suspended a year later, these trade talks were resumed in 2023, and Thai officials highlight the potential economic benefits for both countries upon successful completion.
In addition to economic ties, Thailand and France have committed to strengthening their partnership in defense and cybersecurity. This includes joint efforts to combat cybercrime, online scams, and addressing transnational digital threats. The countries have announced plans to implement the Joint Action Plan to Strengthen the Thai-French Partnership 2026-2028, a move that is expected to pave the way for their formal strategic partnership. Furthermore, Thailand has reiterated its dedication to resolving border issues with Cambodia through peaceful dialogue and adherence to international law.
During his visit to France, Anutin engaged with executives from major French companies such as Airbus, Imerys, EssilorLuxottica, IN Groupe, and Thales Group, encouraging further investment in Thailand’s high-tech and future industries. French companies have shown confidence in Thailand’s investment landscape, with Airbus confirming its intention to expand aviation and engineering operations in the country. This mutual interest in economic collaboration signals a promising future for Thailand-France relations as they work towards a strategic partnership.
