Many people experience the disappointment of purchasing a basil plant from the supermarket, only to see it wither within weeks. While it might seem like neglect is the cause, the problem often begins before the plant even arrives at your home. The lush basil sold in stores is typically composed of numerous young plants crammed into a single pot. This overcrowding, while creating a fuller look, leads to competition among the seedlings for water, sunlight, and nutrients, which can weaken the entire plant.
An effective remedy is to separate the basil into smaller groups and replant them. To do this, carefully remove the plant from its original container and gently divide the roots into three or four sections, ensuring that as many roots as possible remain intact. Each section should then be transferred into its own pot filled with fresh compost. After a thorough watering, place the plants in a warm and bright location.
Regular trimming of the basil tops encourages bushier growth and can prevent premature flowering, contributing to the plant’s health and productivity. With more space to grow, these separated plants are more likely to thrive and continue producing.
Testing this method on a single supermarket basil pot has shown promising results. By dividing the plant into four sections, three of them continued to grow and provided fresh leaves over the subsequent month. This approach can turn an ephemeral kitchen herb into a more enduring supply for cooking and home gardening.
