Short Nap With Contacts Endangers Vision, Experts Warn

by admin477351

Wearing contact lenses to sleep, even if it’s just for a brief nap, poses significant risks to eye health, according to experts. They caution that this habit can greatly elevate the chances of developing serious eye infections and long-term vision issues.

The cornea, the eye’s transparent front layer, obtains oxygen directly from the air to remain healthy. Contact lenses inherently reduce the oxygen supply to the cornea during daily wear, and wearing them during sleep exacerbates this condition by further limiting oxygen access. This reduction in oxygen can weaken the eye’s natural defenses, making it more susceptible to bacterial infections.

A particularly severe risk associated with sleeping in contact lenses is microbial keratitis, an infection of the cornea caused by bacteria. If untreated, this condition can progress to a painful corneal ulcer, potentially leading to permanent scarring and enduring vision impairment. Specialists warn that even napping occasionally with contact lenses on can increase the likelihood of this condition.

Fortunately, these risks can be largely avoided by adhering to recommended lens care practices. Eye health professionals advise removing contact lenses before any sleep, ensuring proper hygiene in lens maintenance, and following the replacement schedule set by eye care experts.

Individuals experiencing symptoms such as redness, pain, sensitivity to light, blurred vision, or sudden changes in eyesight are urged to seek medical attention immediately. Early treatment is crucial to preventing severe damage and safeguarding long-term vision. While contact lenses are generally safe when used correctly, sleeping in them introduces unnecessary risks of preventable eye complications.
