The State Department authorized $15.67 billion in military sales Friday, providing Israel $6.67 billion and Saudi Arabia $9 billion for equipment modernization and capability enhancement. The approvals represent a significant commitment to maintaining American influence in the Middle East while bolstering the defensive capabilities of strategic partners in an increasingly volatile geopolitical landscape marked by regional tensions and concerns about Iranian aggression.

Israel’s package includes combat helicopters ($3.8 billion), ground vehicles ($1.98 billion), vehicle modernization ($740 million), and aircraft ($150 million). The State Department emphasized in separate but nearly identical statements that the United States is committed to the security of Israel, and it is vital to U.S. national interests to assist Israel to develop and maintain a strong and ready self-defense capability through these acquisitions.

The 30 Apache attack helicopters equipped with rocket launchers and advanced targeting gear will significantly upgrade Israeli strike capabilities and improve defensive operations along contested borders and within Israeli territory. The 3,250 light tactical vehicles will be used to move personnel and logistics to extend lines of communication for the Israel Defense Forces, improving operational flexibility and rapid response capabilities. The power packs for armored personnel carriers will modernize vehicles in service since 2008, while the light utility helicopters will complement similar equipment already in Israeli service.

Saudi Arabia receives Patriot missile systems ($9 billion) for air defense enhancement, with the State Department noting that this will improve the security of a major non-NATO ally that is a force for political stability and economic progress in the Gulf Region. The enhanced capability will protect land forces of Saudi Arabia, the United States, and local allies, while significantly improving Saudi Arabia’s contribution to the integrated air and missile defense system in the region.

Congressional Democrats challenge approval procedures and consultation processes, with the House Foreign Affairs Committee’s ranking member stating that the Trump administration has blatantly ignored long-standing congressional prerogatives. Representative Gregory Meeks criticized the administration for disregarding congressional oversight and years of standing practice while refusing to engage Congress on critical questions about the next steps in Gaza and broader U.S.-Israel policy.
